The Rookie Rendezvous has become a mainstay of Pure Water Paddlers events. It is held in the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior. Its purpose is to allow paddlers who are new to 'big water' an opportunity to gain some experience in sea kayaking and acquire some local knowledge about paddling in one of the gems of the kayaking world. Several experienced paddlers will share their knowledge, and will make sure that safety is always priority one. Paddlers with more experience can also benefit from the shared experience and knowledge of PWP members. We will hold at least one, but hopefully more, longer shoreline paddles. Depending on weather and water conditions, we will also cross to Sand Island to visit the sea caves, and tour the Myers Beach sea caves. If conditions are too demanding, there are other great options that will make this trip well worth attending.

Participants must be able to demonstrate a satisfactory wet exit, at least one re-entry technique (such as a 'heel-hook), and be able to assist in at least one type of 'swimmer recovery' (such as a 'T' rescue). You must also be able to paddle up to 10 miles per day; with several shore breaks, this is not as hard as it sounds. There are still several weeks to prepare, and several club members are available to help you meet these requirements.

Required equipment: sea kayak (minimum 15 ft.); wet suit or dry suit; PFD (must be worn whenever we are on the water); spray skirt; rain gear; paddle (!); paddle float. A change of dry clothes (in case you take an unexpected swim); a dry bag to keep them dry would be sensible.

The rookie Rendezvous is for those who have had their gear and skills checked off with Stephe or any other qualified member. We have the group camp site reserved for the nights of the 28th through the 30th. So, show up any time after 4 pm on Thursday. We will need to vacate the camp site on Sunday afternoon. The registration fee of $40 covers your camping fee. You will need to bring your own camping gear and food. There are showers and restrooms at the camp grounds. We will be paddling along the shore of Lake Superior and, weather permitting, we will make a crossing and, perhaps, visit some sea caves. For safety purposes all participants will be required to wear a wet suit or dry suit. You should have your pfd, spray skirt, and any other safety gear with you.

This is a tent-only site, so you will need to arrange for gear if you do not already have it. We are each on our own for food and beverage.

The RR is always a fun event, so if you have a hankering to visit Gitchee Gummee, this is your chance!
