Cool water paddling

Very well stated Rob thanks for sharing.

Recreational kayaks by design are very stable and difficult to tip. It isn't uncommon to hear the sentiment "I won't tip over" or "I have never tipped over". So I just wanted to share an experience that illustrates that rec kayaks can and do tip.

I was paddling with a friend and club member on Dells Pond in early spring. We were both dressed for immersion and taking safety precautions because the water was still very cold. We passed a couple who were paddling recreational kayaks. They were roughly in the middle of the lake and not wearing any thermal protection but thankfully did have pfds. We waved and paddled on.

As we were returning to the launch we saw both kayaks upside down and paddles floating nearby. There was also a canoe halfway back to a dock on the west bank that we later discovered was carrying the second unintentional "swimmer" back to shore having already rescued the first "swimmer".

Thankfully one of the homeowners on that side of the Pond had witnessed the incident from thier dock and were able to launch a rescue with thier canoe. Paramedics were on the scene as well. The woman was still able to walk unassisted but the man had to be assisted up the stairway from waters edge to the home above as he had badly compromised motor function from hypothermia.

If those homeowners had not seen the incident or lacked the skills to retrieve a floundering person from the water and get them into a canoe (no easy task) there could have been a very different outcome for those paddlers.

It should be noted that the water and air temps that day met the 120 rule criteria. The 120 rule is somewhat of a cold water myth. The link Mark provided is an excellent source of cold water immersion information and explains WHY the 120 rule is NOT a sound criteria as well as dispelling other cold water immersion myths.

The safest action is to stay off the water until water temps are safe, but if you choose to cold water paddle arm yourself with knowledge so you can take sensible precautions.

If you have questions about what those sensible precautions may be, this is a great place for that conversation.

Its that time of the year when everyone wants to start paddling. Before you go learn about cold water safety. What should I wear? Dress for the swim. A capsize in cold water can be fatal. Use the rule of 120... If the sum of the air and water temperature is 120 degress or lower a dry or wet suit is recomended. Check out the awesome link to learn more
