2025 Wausau Weekend August 1-3
Author Last Post

I believe everyone has canceled for various reasons, so we are not expecting anyone in Wausau! If you ARE planning to come let me know! Bill and I will probably paddle tomorrow in any event. The AQI is improving and the weather forecast looks promising.

Hi Sonia: I just heard from Sharon regarding my being the last one on the list. Since it sounds like it would be a lot more fun with a group I probably will also withdraw unfortunately. It’s no fun camping alone and I did enough of that up in Michigan. So thank you anyway for all the planning and I hope your recovery is going along smoothly. Hope to see you soon. I apologize for the delay but I don’t go on this forum very often, especially when working.

Diane changed her mind about attending the Wausau weekend so she will not be there.

Unfortunately, it is with deep regret that I need to cancel my participation in the Wausau weekend due to ongoing lung irritation from last night’s smoky social paddle.

This leaves just Jenny Heller who emailed me yesterday as follows:

“Hi Sharon: I will be coming over on Friday after work and paddling on Saturday. I have obligations back at home Saturday late afternoon that I will have to get back for. Let me know what I can bring.

Jenny“

It has been brought to my attention that our air quality index, both here and in Wausau, has now reached "unhealthy" levels. The recommendation is to limit exposure and reduce activity levels. How do you Wausau weekenders feel about this? Kathy O'Leary already indicated she will stay home if it doesn't improve. I haven't had issues, but I haven't been outside doing strenuous activities either. Feedback please!

We have Sharon, Kathy, Jenny Heller and Diane registered. Anyone else planning on coming for all or part of this weekend? And Jenny and Diane, can you let me know when you are coming and what activities you will participate in? IFriday night sunset boat ride? Barbecue? Camping? I should have figured out a better way to have you register. I'm assuming the Saturday kayak is something you all want to do, but I'm wondering about the rest. See you soon!

I plan to come over Saturday morning for the farmers market, river paddle and barbeque only. Won't be camping. Looking forward to it! :)

Kathy

I plan on camping Fri & Sat nights. I’ll join the Saturday paddle & barbecue and would love a pontoon ride. I hope to watch the whitewater course again this year. Let me know what I can bring for the barbecue.

2025 Wausau Weekend August 1-3 is fast approaching & I highly recommend attending. We had such a great time last year we asked Bill & Sonia to host us again. The main event is Saturday’s 2-3 hour paddle at 11:00am on the Big & Little Rib Rivers. Weather will be 80 degrees & partly sunny, with no rain. Saturday evening Bill will host a barbecue at his home.

Free camping is available in a city park adjacent to the whitewater course. Bathrooms with running water and outdoor showers available. Those who want to try the whitewater course on Sunday can, as it's a recreational release. $55.00 will get you a lesson and complete outfitting. Wausauwhitewater.org Several members tried this last year & had a great time.

If you come Friday night, Bill will take anyone interested on a sunset cruise of Lake Wausau on his pontoon.

Registration is required so Bill & Sonia know how many people to expect. Also, please use the “Reply” feature below the forum post indicating what days/events you plan on attending.

More details are below.

Sorry for the late details! As many of you know, Sonia has been recovering from knee replacements and hasn't been out on the water. But the weekend is still on! Here are the details: We are planning a recreational trip on the Big and Little Rib Rivers for Saturday. The rivers have no current so we can start and end at the same place. There are separate channels so it won't be an out and back - and to make it more special, it's part of the newest National Park Recreational Waterway, the Great Pinery Heritage Waterway. We will be meeting at 11:00 on Saturday, August 2, at Gulliver's Landing. It's located at 151701 Gadwall Lane near Olivia's restaurant. There is parking, a kayak launch, and restrooms are available. Bring food if you want, or we will stop at Trail's End Lodge after approximately 90 minutes of kayaking for a beer or food and restrooms, then continue back to Gulliver's Landing. Total time including lunch break will be about 3-4 hours. Special attractions on the river include a wildlife sanctuary, an abundance of osprey and eagles, and other fun wildlife. On return we will pass Wisconsin's first paddle park and a rookery park (largest blue heron rookery in the state). Sunday there is a recreational whitewater release in downtown Wausau and lessons are available. Check it out at Wausauwhitewater.org. Several of us did this last year and it was a fun experience. All levels of lessons are available with equipment provided. Do your own registration if interested. An additional recreational paddle may be organized for Sunday morning if there is interest in that.

Those wanting to camp, Friday or Saturday night or both (or even Sunday), can camp free at the Whitewater Park located at 388 River Drive in Wausau. Camping is basically a free-for-all on the grassy area. Cars can be driven right up to your selected patch of turf, small campers allowed, and maybe one or two larger campers if necessary. No hookups, but they have flush toilets and outdoor showers. Fair warning: last year there were some thefts of high-end whitewater kayaks. Our group was not victimized, but if you camp be sure to lock your kayak if you leave it at the site. There are a couple of picnic pavilions in the campground, but no designated campsites with picnic tables or anything. So bring chairs and whatever else you need to make your camping experience the best it can be!

If you come Friday night, Bill will take anyone interested on a sunset cruise of Lake Wausau on his pontoon at 7. Saturday morning there is a Farmer's Market right by the campground where coffee and breakfast items can be purchased. Saturday night Bill and I will host a barbecue in his backyard at 2207 Mount View Boulevard. We will have burgers, chips, watermelon and coleslaw as well as beer, Sangria, soft drinks and games.

If that isn't enough Wausau for anyone, Sunday night is Jazz on the River in Wausau from 5-7 p.m.; program is Battle of the Saxes. Camping is available Sunday night for those staying.

Hope to hear from those interested soon! I miss my paddling buddies.
