What is this?
The Rookie Rendezvous has become a mainstay of Pure Water Paddlers events. It is held in the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior. Its purpose is to allow paddlers who are new to 'big water' an opportunity to gain some experience in sea kayaking and acquire some local knowledge about paddling in one of the gems of the kayaking world. Several experienced paddlers will share their knowledge, and will make sure that safety is always priority one. Paddlers with more experience can also benefit from the shared experience and knowledge of PWP members. This years Rookie Rendezvous will be a little different than past years, we will be island camping on one of the closer islands (York) to Little Sand Bay. This is kayak camping, similar to backpacking in gear and technique, and requires us to start with a crossing from the mainland to York (a 5 mile paddle with a 1/2 to 1 mile crossing to the campsite). From there we can explore two nearby islands, the sea caves at Sand Island, and the lighthouse at Raspberry.
If the weather does not cooperate (we will be monitoring the weather constantly both on and off the islands), the plan B is to reserve sites at Herbster on Friday and find paddles close to shore that are within the group's skill level.
Participants must be able to demonstrate a satisfactory wet exit, at least one re-entry technique (such as a 'heel-hook), and be able to assist in at least one type of 'swimmer recovery' (such as a 'T' rescue). You must also be able to paddle up to 10 miles per day; with several shore breaks, this is not as hard as it sounds.
Required equipment: sea kayak (minimum 15 ft.); wet suit or dry suit; PFD (must be worn whenever we are on the water); spray skirt; rain gear; paddle (!); paddle float. A change of dry clothes (in case you take an unexpected swim); a dry bag to keep them dry would be sensible.
Camping equipment: We have a reserved site on York campsite 3. If you are familiar with kayak camping or backpacking, then you probably already know what you need to bring! If you are not, please reach out to me by phone or e-mail and we can go over whether you have what you need or if we can lend you what you need!
The RR is always a fun event, so if you have a hankering to visit Gitchee Gummee, this is your chance!
